Music Monday: Record Store Day 2014

I’m going to admit it, I’m not the world’s biggest fan of vinyl. If I can’t carry it around in my pocket – or easily copy it to a digital format – then I’m probably not going to listen to it. However, I do love a well put together release – and, more importantly, independent record stores. So I’ll be sneaking out of Eastercon this Saturday 19th April for Record Store Day 2014 – probably to catch Bridie Jackson and the Arbour at Love Music‘s live band shenanigans – and aiming to pick up one or two of these…

Anathema, At The Gates, Beach Boys, Beans on Toast, Between the Buried and Me, Bis, Botch, Cave In, Clint Mansell, Clutch / Lionize, Conor Oberst, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, David Bowie, David Lynch, Dean Martin, Devo, Dinosaur JR, Dream Theater, Dresden Dolls, Elbow, Fela Kuti, Flaming Lips, Fleetwood Mac, Frank Zappa, Garbage, Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly, Grace Jones, Grateful Dead, Green Day, Hawkwind, Husker Du, Ice T, Insomnium, Johnny Cash, John Spencer Blues Explosion, Joy Division, Katastrophy Wife, Katatonia, Kings of Leon, Kodaline, Kylie Minogue, LCD Soundsystem, Lee Perry, Lemonheads, Luke Haines, Machine Head, Mae, Marc Bolan, Marillion, Mastodon, Matt Berry, Maximo Park, Motorhead, Mudhoney, The Muppet Movie OSR, Neil Young, Nina Persson, Nina Simone, Nirvana, The Notwist, Opeth, Ozric Tentacles, Pet Shop Boys, Pharoahe Monch, Pissed Jeans, Placebo, The Pogues, REM, Radkey, Rammstein, Ray Parker Jr, Rival Sons, Roger Waters, The Stones, Screaming Trees, Sensefield, Shlohmo, Shonen Knife, Sick of it all, Sikth, Songs:Ohia, Soundgarden, The Specials, The Blockheads, Twilight Sad, Twin Atlantic, Ulver, Masters of Misery – Homage to Black Sabbath, Satellite of Love, Xtra Mile 10th anniversary box set, Winnebago Deal.

Unfortunately, most of that’ll have to wait until I win the lottery. So I’ve narrowed it down to the following:

Katatonia – Kocytean (Peaceville)
Six rare b-sides and some lovely-looking artwork. Yup.

The Muppets Movie OST (UMC)
Do I really need to explain this one?

Nina Simone – My Baby Just Cares For Me (Charly)
Still the definitive version.

Ray Parker Jr – Ghostbusters theme (Sony)
As part of the 30th anniversary celebrations for the original movie, this’ll be out on glow in the dark picture vinyl.

Ghostbusters

HELLO.

Twin Atlantic – Heart and Soul (Red Bull Records)
White sandblasted vinyl version of the recent single.

Various – Xtra Mile 10th Anniversary Box set (Xtra Mile Recordings)
As you’ve probably guessed, Xtra Mile have hit their tenth anniversary, and as a result, they’re releasing this sequel to the original Xtra Mile Singles Sessions. Chris T-T & the Hoodrats, Beans On Toast, Crazy Arm, Möngöl Hörde, Jamie Lenman and more? Bargain.

However, if you’re missing Record Store Day this year, and kicking yourself for losing out, just a heads up – Banquet Records will have any leftovers available online on 26th April. Enjoy!

Good call. I might see you there at some point if I can wiggle out of the con for a couple of hours. Couple of pointers from a RSD veteran:

1/ I’m not a collector and just buy what suits me rather than the special edition stuff, but Love Music tends to have a sizeable queue of collector types before it opens on RSD. I’d definitely make it your primary port of call, but if you miss anything you might be able to get it from Monorail down in the Merchant City.

2/ Love Music is a brilliant, but tiny, TINY, shop and it’s always mobbed on RSD, even before they bring in the bands which take up about a fifth of the available floor space. But the bands are always good and it’s worth the crush to get in and get involved in the atmosphere. And if you end up out on the pavement, the free tea and cake and the press-ups guy are a decent consolation.

Press-ups guy? Seriously? Excellent. Tea and cake is always better when someone else is doing the press-ups for you.
Thanks for the heads up about the queuing and Monorail. Might go there anyway, if I have time…
