That’s the By Toutatis feature in this month’s The Culture Magazine (the supplement with The Journal newspaper), capped off with their current promo shot – a photo from a shoot I did with the band back in February.
The shoot was something of a last minute thing. Frontman Daniel Cochran (also of Middle Eastern outfit The Belly of Paris) is based in Bahrain, and so this was all squeezed between soundcheck and set during one of the band’s rare live shows. The brief I’d been given was to come up with something in high contrast, preferably something like this promo shot of Little Comets.
I’d done a little scouting for locations, but my initial choice had turned out to be a bust (some places are never quite the shape or size our memories make them). Repairing to the Royal Station Hotel, there was plenty to admire in the wide staircase and Victorian tiles, but this time, it didn’t have the feel I was after. Nothing quite seemed to fit.
Until we hit the bar.
While the boys ordered in some cocktails, I ran out to the station to pick up a couple of packs of cards. The boys sat down to a few hands, and after a while, we ended up with something like this:
Which brings us to the reason for that feature: By Toutatis are back playing a couple of gigs this Summer, including shows with Eliza Carthy and Public Enemy (!). You’ll be able to catch them at the following dates…
4th July – w/ Eliza Carthy Trio (Saul Rose and Dave DeLarre), Fran Muriel. Sound of Silence @ Victoria Inn, Saltburn.
*Just announced* 8th July – w/ Hold Music and General Sherman @ Westgarth SC, Middlesbrough.
28th July – Stockton Weekender (Day 2) w/ Public Enemy, Reverend & the Makers, Peter Hook & The Light, The Gimme Gimmicks…
So, this seems like a good time to share with you some of the outtakes from the February photoshoot. You’ll find them in the gallery below. Enjoy!
