Jason Heller’s Strange Stars Launch

Glasgow pals, I’ve got one more event before the end of this month. You may know Jason Heller as the former Hugo award-winning editor of Clarkesworld, writer about pop culture for everyone from Rolling Stone to NPR, or author of Taft 2012 and numerous other short stories. Bringing all this together is Strange Stars: David Bowie, Pop Music and the Decade Sci-Fi Exploded, his new book about the connection between 70s pop, such as Bowie, T-Rex, Roxy Music, Hendrix, and the science fiction luminaries of the period, such as Stanley Kubrick, Philip K. Dick, Ursula Le Guin, J. G. Ballard and more. Happily, it combines two of my favourite things — progressive music and SF — and has some delightful anecdotes about, for example, Hawkwind and Michael Moorcock.

All of which explains why I’m so delighted to be helping Jason launch this book next Tuesday 30th October. Join us from 6:30pm at Waterstones Argyle Street, and don’t forget to click the link below to buy your tickets.

***UPDATED*** Sept & Oct 2018: ‘The Anniversary’ Honorable Mention, plus Justina Robson, From Glasgow to Saturn, and Fantasycon 2018

Before I get onto upcoming things, some news: ‘The Anniversary’, which first appeared in last year’s Black Static #61, has received an Honorable Mention in Volume 10 of Ellen Datlow’s Best New Horror anthology. It’s a stunning achievement for a drabble that’s already been honoured with a British Fantasy Award shortlisting, and I’d like to thank Ellen and her team for considering my wee tale for this critically acclaimed series.

Here’s a quick round-up of what’s happening right now.

On 26th September, From Glasgow to Saturn will be launching Issue 41 at DRAM in Glasgow. Join us for story and poetry readings, as well as the famous From Glasgow to Saturn open mic sessions. Sadly, this will also be my last issue with the journal for the foreseeable future, so if you’d like to quiz me on what it’s like and how to get involved, please join us on 26th September from 6pm at DRAM in Glasgow. Click here for more details.

On 4th October, I’ll be interviewing Justina Robson, one of British SF’s most celebrated writers, at the launch of her new novel, Salvation’s Fire (Solaris). This is part of the After the War series, set in the same shared world as Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Redemption’s Blade — so if you’d like to hear about Justina’s first published Fantasy novel, this an event not to be missed. Please join us for wine and chat on 4th October from 6:30pm at Waterstones Argyle Street. For more information, click here. ***UPDATE: This event has now been cancelled***

Finally, on 19th – 21st October, I’ll be at The Queen Hotel in Chester for Fantasycon. The schedule has yet to be finalized (I’ll post again when it has been), but I’ll be there for the full weekend, likely appearing on at least one panel and reading that weekend. On the Sunday afternoon (21st), the winners of this year’s British Fantasy Awards will be announced, so if you’d like to know who we on the Best Artist jury picked as our winner this year, click here to grab yourself a ticket and join us there – or alternatively, follow the British Fantasy Society and Fantasycon 2018 twitter accounts for live tweeting on the day.

*UPDATED* June ’18: Glasgow Science Festival and Cameron Johnston Book Launch

Now that Satellite 6 is over, here’s a wee update on how my June is shaping up so far.

Cameron Johnston’s The Traitor God Book Launch (5th June)

Firstly, I’ll be in conversation with Cameron Johnston when he releases his debut novel The Traitor God (Angry Robot) in Glasgow next Tuesday. Come join us for a chat about the real cost of magic, brutally realistic battle sequences, and a truly horrifying monstrous entity from 6:30pm at Waterstone Argyle Street.

Click here for the event on the Waterstones website.

Glasgow Science Festival – ‘Discover New Worlds Through Creative Writing’ (13th June)

Secondly, Oliver Langmead and I will be hosting the latest in our series of creative writing workshops, ‘Discover New Worlds Through Creative Writing’, on 13th June. Students so far have really enjoyed the sense-based nature of the workshops – a couple have even felt prompted to start writing again after significant breaks.

So why not click here to order free tickets for the event and join us from 5:30pm – 7:30pm on 13th June at the University of Glasgow?

UPDATE: Also, while I’m here, a quick heads up: From Glasgow to Saturn is now open to submissions for Issue 41 until 14th June. For more information, head to https://glasgowtosaturn.com/ or check out our Facebook post.

Once June is over, I’ll be off for a couple of months to focus on a 15,000 word Dissertation, my final assessment for the Masters in Fantasy degree. Unless any news crops up in the meantime, I’ll be in touch again in the Autumn. In the meantime, here’s wishing you a wonderful Summer!
