It’s been a while – but to make up for it, here’s not one, but two events I’ll be appearing at this April (virtually and in London) and May (in Glasgow). Read on for more details…

Digital Heroisms
Unfortunately I won’t be attending this week’s CoNZealand, the first ever virtual Worldcon, due to family issues. However, a few days after, I will be appearing at the Digital Heroisms symposium, taking place on 5th August.
In the committee’s own words, “Digital Heroisms is an online conference exploring Fantasy, the digital and the concept of heroism”. I’ll be doing my part in ‘Breaking the Protection Stave: God of War as Critique of the Heroic Magic Circle’, which will see me share a little of my doctoral work into representations of toxic behaviour in speculative media, focusing on Sony’s 2018 masterpiece.
Digital Heroisms will be taking place virtually in Discord and in Runescape. More information can be found on the official facebook page. Tickets are still available from Eventbrite.
The cards have been sent, the gifts are all wrapped, and this afternoon I go into Newcastle for my annual Christmas whiskey-drinking session with a local pal. In other words, this is the perfect moment to reflect on the past year.
Dublin Worldcon kicks off in a little over two weeks – and I can’t wait to see you there! I’ll be appearing on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday on the main and academic tracks (details below). I’m looking forward to chatting about musicals, gods and superheroes, and building better online environments with you – or simply having a nice natter over a seasonally-appropriate beverage.
With Eastercon over, and term nearly done, you’d be forgiven for thinking I’d be taking a break from now until Dublin Worldcon this August. On the contrary: with CYMERA Festival, GIFCon 2019 and more on the way, it’s shaping up to be a busy summer. Whether you’re into fiction, fantastic academia, or fandom, here’s where you can find me over May and June – and where you can hear me before all that.
